Elle is able to summon the dead from purgatory. However, for every pact with the dead, her life-force is drained, decreasing her overall lifespan. By summoning a spirit, she makes a pact with them: one favor, one answer. For her to get an answer for any question she asks, she is required to complete a spirit’s favor.
