A Kind of Magik is a digitally inked and colored version of a line drawing by professional comic book artist Elena Casagrande. Her work spans iconic publishers like Marvel, DC, Image, Boom! Studios, and Titan Comics—and her clean yet expressive style was a joy to work with.

Digital Inks & Colours

For this piece, I used Photoshop to trace the original line art and create crisp, solid vector lines. I refer to this process as digitally inking and coloring, which gives the art a more polished, comic-ready feel. Once the linework was done, I moved on to the colors—building a bold yet balanced palette that echoed the energy of the original sketch.

Behind the Process

To show how the piece evolved, I included a side-by-side slider comparison. On one side is Elena’s original pencil art, and on the other is my final digital version. This side-by-side helps illustrate how digital inking and flat coloring can highlight form, enhance depth, and add personality to an already dynamic composition.

Reflecting on the Work

Digitally reimagining an artist’s line art always feels a bit like collaboration. You try to preserve the spirit of the piece while bringing something new to the table. In this case, I focused on how light, shape, and motion play across Magik’s pose. There’s strength in her gesture, but also elegance—something I wanted to reflect through my coloring choices.

Working on this was both a technical and creative challenge, and one I thoroughly enjoyed. Every project like this helps me refine not just my process, but also how I interpret and respond to another artist’s visual language.

About Me

I’m JP B. Bantigue—a designer, digital illustrator, and longtime comic art enthusiast. Inks & Colors is where I return to the craft of inking and digital coloring, often working over existing linework to bring characters and scenes to life. Whether it’s a commission, a tribute, or an experimental study, I find joy in tracing lines with purpose and layering colors to build mood and texture.
