Mystery Boxes: Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Don’t

Mystery boxes, also known as loot boxes, have become a prevalent feature in the gaming industry, offering players the chance to obtain random in-game items or titles for a set price. Platforms like Fanatical have popularized this concept, allowing gamers to purchase bundles without knowing their exact contents. While this can lead to exciting discoveries, it also raises concerns about the value and ethics of such offerings.

My Experience with Fanatical’s Mystery Boxes

Originally launched as Bundle Stars, Fanatical is a UK-based online PC game retailer (similar to Humble Bundle) known to offer Steam games, bundles, and now, even digital comics. One thing that’s unique about Fanatical, as compared to Humble Bundle, is their Mystery Box bundle offerings. Considered to be a sham among fellow Reddit users, Fanatical has often promised AAA games time and again, only to disappoint most of the time.

I ventured into Fanatical’s mystery boxes on two occasions:

The Magnificent Mystery Machine ($6.99)

This bundle yielded a mix of titles, including Serial Cleaner, SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition, and Star Wars: Jedi Knight – Jedi Academy. While some games were noteworthy, others felt like filler content, making the overall experience underwhelming.

Mystery Goldrush Bundle ($9.99)

Priced slightly higher, this bundle offered titles like Batman: Arkham Knight, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor – Game of the Year Edition, and Payday 2: Ultimate Edition. The quality of games in this bundle was notably better, providing more value for the investment.

The Gamble of Mystery Boxes

Purchasing mystery boxes is akin to gambling (even if Fanatical doesn’t quite say so); the outcome is uncertain, and while there’s potential for valuable rewards, there’s also a risk of disappointment. This unpredictability has sparked debates about the ethical implications of such mechanics in gaming. Critics argue that loot boxes can lead to addictive behaviors and may encourage gambling tendencies, especially among younger audiences.

Recent Developments and Regulatory Actions

In recent years, there has been increased scrutiny over the potential risks associated with loot boxes. A study published in Computers in Human Behaviour highlighted a correlation between the purchase of loot boxes and mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, and impulsivity. The study also found a positive relationship between loot box purchasing and problem gambling behaviors.

Furthermore, regulatory bodies have taken action against companies employing such mechanics. In January 2025, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a settlement with Cognosphere, the developer of Genshin Impact, over allegations of misleading players about loot box odds and targeting children. The company agreed to pay a $20 million fine and implement measures to increase transparency in their loot box mechanics. The Verge

Conclusion

Mystery boxes offer a blend of excitement and risk. While they can provide value, it’s essential for gamers to approach them with caution, understanding the potential implications. As the industry evolves and regulatory measures are implemented, the future of loot boxes remains a topic of significant discussion.
