The alarms wailed.
There was chaos beyond the walls. Explosions, fear and death.
They scrambled towards the fortified walls. Once they get inside, they were sure to be safe.
Heavily-armed turrets covered their escape until they ran for the gate. Medics hurried to their side.
Two of them didn’t make it. “We have to go back!” cried one of the survivors. He thought of the others who got left behind– they were practically family.
Overpowered, they defended themselves– all six of them. It was only supposed to be a reconnaissance mission. But the enemy knew where to find them. They were trapped– fitting for how they were called– like RATS.
The mission briefing said the location was secure and that the only danger they would most likely encounter was the heavy snow storm. Somebody must have given away their positions. Someone inside. Either that or they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It was a death trap.
“No,” said the other. It was obvious that the latter had more authority. A hard decision, not a command. With regret, a broken heart and some broken bones, the other retreated to the infirmary.
Keeper stood by the gate, staring at the chaos beyond the walls. It was never an easy decision, but there was no other way. It would’ve been a walk in the park, but they were heavily outnumbered. We used to have the numbers, but we were too busy fighting against each other, she thought, if only I could go back in time, I might have made different decisions.
But she knew there was never going back. Not in this world, not anymore. Not without Matteo Silangan.
