Here’s a quick first impressions analysis of some of the upcoming games in my Steam “Upcoming Releases” Discovery Queue today, June 5, 2020.

Starmancer

Starmancer by Ominux Games

Starmancer, developed by Ominux Games and published by Chucklefish, is an indie, space colony simulation, strategy game. The game is presented in an isometric perspective with depth and pixel graphics. It’s basically like Stardew Valley in space, but with dangers and enemies that invade your home.

One of my personal preferences in game is the pixel art style. I don’t know why, but maybe it reminds me of the classic games I used to play when I was younger. An instant follow for me.

The Waylanders

The Waylanders by GATO STUDIO

The Waylanders, developed and published by GATO STUDIO, is an indie, tactical, party-based ARPG. The game has a ton of features, including engaging story, over 800+ skills, 6 classes and 30 advanced classes. The overall art style kind of reminds me of Torchlight, with its cartoony art direction. The gameplay, however, is not real time.

Another personal preference for me in any kind of game is the character customization option. I like games that allow you to personalize your characters the way you want them to look, based on how you perceive their personalities would be. For me, it makes the experience more immersive and personal.

Starship Troopers – Terran Command

Starship Troopers - Terran Command by The Aristocrats

Starship Troopers – Terran Command, developed by The Aristocrats and published by Slitherine Ltd., is a real-time strategy (RTS) and survival game set in the Starship Troopers universe. My first impression of the game based on the gameplay trailer is that it’s kind of like They Are Billions, except you play and control the Starship Troopers infantry and you fight off the Arachnid alien threat (instead of zombies).

I’ve never been a fan of the movie/s, but I do like the idea of survival games. It’s less likely that I’ll ever pick this up. It’s actually more likely that I would pick up They Are Billions (even though I don’t have the time to play it).

Touhou Seirensen ~ Undefined Fantastic Object.

Touhou Seirensen, developed by 上海アリス幻樂団 (Team Shanghai Alice) and published by Mediascape Co., Ltd., is a Steam release of a 2009 indie, bullet hell shooter.

There’s not a lot of information on the game whether the artworks and assets will be updated, or if the gameplay and UI will be improved.

Stronghold: Warlords

Strongholds - Warlords by FireFly Studios

Stronghold: Warlords, developed and published by FireFly Studios, is city and base building, multiplayer RTS game. Based on the game’s trailers, my first impression is that this game looks like a mix between Banished and the classic, Age of Empires.

The city/base building aspect of the game looks good, I hope (though I’m not planning on playing this anyway) that the RTS aspect of the game lives up to its the AOE experience (at least for me), or maybe even better.

Bright Memory: Infinite / 光明记忆:无限

Bright Memory: Infinite by FYQD-Studio

Bright Memory: Infinite, developed by FYQD-Studio and published with PLAYISM, is a sci-fi, FPS game, that mixes the melee (sword) and range (gun) type as arsenals. The overall look and feel of the game reminds me of Shadow Warrior 2, the first time I saw it.

So, apparently, if you already have the Bright Memory game on Steam, you will automatically receive the Bright Memory: Infinite game for free once it’s released. Bright Memory costs around US$6 (based on my country’s conversion rate) but seeing how Infinite is infinitely better than the former, the latter could very well cost more expensive. It’s definitely a steal to get it Infinite.

Cthulhu: Books of Ancients

Cthulhu: Books of Ancients by SimFabric

Cthulhu: Books of Ancients, developed and published by SimFabric, is a first-person, horror game, where you play as a detective looking for six missing children. The story revolves around the Lovecraftian lore and deity Cthulhu. From the trailer and images on Steam, it looks like it’s definitely a horror game. As much as I would like to try it out, I probably wouldn’t.

FAIRY TAIL

FAIRY TAIL by KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD.

FAIRY TAIL, developed and published by KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD., is a JRPG based on the manga and anime of the same name. Unlike the Dynasty Warriors series, FAIRY TAIL seems to go to a different and more of an RPG, Final Fantasy like, direction.

I’m not really a fan of the manga or the anime, and that of the gameplay; but I would probably want to try out watching the anime if time permits.

Battle For Crown: Multiplayer

Battle For Crown: Multiplayer by AlphaDigital Development

Battle For Crown: Multiplayer, developed and published by AlphaDigital Development, is an indie, PvP, strategy simulation game, where you deploy troops and try to defeat the enemy.

It’s slated to release today (or maybe tomorrow, because of the timezone), but they do have a Steam gift card giveaway worth US$10, if you add the game to the wishlist.

1971 PROJECT HELIOS

1971 PROJECT HELIOS by Recotechnology S.L.

1971 PROJECT HELIOS, developed and published by Recotechnology S.L., is an indie, post-apocalyptic, tactical game. This game looks good, especially with the character design and overall post-apocalyptic genre, so I may just follow it for now.

Seek Girl:Fog Ⅰ

Seek Girl:Fog Ⅰ, developed and published by DSGame, is a casual adventure game from the likes of Crypt of the Necrodancer and Sproggiwood, where each step you take, the monsters around you also move accordingly. The graphic assets and gameplay closely resemble that of Sproggiwood though.

Most people usually buy these games mainly for their in-game artworks (which are far better in quality than the actual gameplay itself), in-game achievements, trading cards. I’m personally not looking forward to these types of games.

Warning: This game is intended for mature audiences.
